Caching improves access performance and more!

Level 2 (L2) caching has a demonstrable value in accelerating data I/O performance. However, it can also make a big contribution to mitigating the consequence of hardware failures. L2 caching eliminates performance degradation resulting from hardware failure by ensuring most read requests are served from solid state storage, rather than hard disk drive storage. This white paper describes various situations, and provides data from real-world testing where solid state storage has boosted overall system performance by extending the controller's on-board memory.
